Glenn David Schubert, 57, of Carbondale, passed away at 11:33 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
He was born in St. Louis on Nov. 20, 1958, following his brother Gregg by five minutes. They would become the first of three sets of twin cousins in the family.
Glenn, fondly known to many as “Schuby,” was a drumming prodigy at an early age. He was first chair drummer at Nameoki, Coolidge and Granite City North high school bands. He began his professional music career at age 13 and continued playing in a number of bands throughout his life.
Glenn received his bachelor’s degree in biology from SIUE and continued his education and training in forensic sciences in Joliet, Ill. He has been employed as a forensic scientist at the Illinois State Police Crime Laboratory for over 30 years. He began his career at the Carbondale Crime Lab, where he became a renowned hair and fiber expert. He later transferred to the ISP Crime Lab in Belleville, Ill., following the closing of the Carbondale office, where he specialized in DNA forensics. He served as a past president to the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists (MAFS), received many awards and special recognitions for his work and publications throughout his career, and also appeared on three episodes of the television show “Forensic Files.”
He was an active athlete, participating in a variety of sports, including volleyball, biking and running. His hobbies also included storm-chasing and photography, which he often shared with his many friends. Glenn will also be remembered as an avid Cardinals fan.
He was a longtime supporter of the American Red Cross. In addition to teaching CPR/First Responder courses, he was a frequent donor, having donated his ninth gallon of blood just last week. He used his experience in CPR to administer aid many times throughout his life, saving other lives in the process. He will continue to help others in that he chose to be an organ/tissue donor.
Glenn is survived by his mother, Millie Schubert of Granite City; one daughter, Amanda Jean Schubert of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, Ronald Schubert of Granite City, and his twin brother, Dr. Gregory Schubert of Chicago; one grandson, Jackson David Schubert of Tucson, Ariz.; dear friends, Patti Clark and Larry Beard of Carbondale; one niece; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
