Grace Nell McLaughlin, 88, of Bethalto, passed away at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center in Alton with her family by her side.
She was born Aug. 8, 1927, in Coffeyville, Kan., the daughter of Albert and Rosella “Grace” (Wade) Hastings.
Grace was a lifelong member of the Disciple of Christ Christian Church in Coffeyville and later in St. Louis in Moline Acres, where she was involved in Bible studies and the choir. Plus she edited the church paper. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, served in leadership in the Christian Women’s Fellowship and she wrote for the Coffeyville newspaper in the society column. She enjoyed sewing, reading, listening to music and most of all she loved to play the piano.
She is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Charlotte and Terry French of East Alton and Nancy and Max Welch of Oxford, Miss.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Vanessa and Michael Fritsche, Travis and Amy French, Brandon French and his fiancée, Stephanie Chow, Emily and Kenneth DeSouza and Monica and Craig Lovejoy; six great-grandchildren, Hailee, Zachary, Arwen, Claire, Katherine and Cole; and her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, Charlotte Licklider, Vivian Conant and Mary Francis Miller; and six brothers, Wade, Albert, Austin, Rodney, Lawrence and Aubrey.
Visitation will be from 9:30 until services at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Dr. Judy Ridlen officiating.
Burial will be at 12:45 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
