Harold J. “Potts” Portell, 85, of Granite City, passed away at 10:18 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, in Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.
He was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Granite City, the son of the late Vincent Portell and Victoria Coleman.
He married Carolyn “Kay” Robey Portell on April 26, 1958, in St. Louis. She survives.
Harold was a Veteran of Navy Korea, a member of Granite City Eagles, AMVETS and Knights of Columbus No. 1098, a wrestler at SIUC, University of Oklahoma Navy, Granite City High School, played on the State Championship baseball team and a member of the Granite City High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Harold was a retired Granite City fireman and a draftsman for HBE Corp of St. Louis.
Other survivors include his children, Mike (Tabitha) Portell of Little Rock, Ark., Dan (Linda) Portell of Richmond, Va., Jim Portell of Edwardsville, Dave (Tracy) Portell of Pontoon Beach, Kenny Portell of Maryville, Cheryl Portell DuBoise of Edwardsville and Scott (Jeannie) Portell of Troy; sister, Rose Wohstadter of St. Louis; brother, Dick (Emma) Portell of Granite City; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law, Rene Portell; four sisters and four brothers.
Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 19, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City.
Funeral services were Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City with Fr. Jeff Holtman officiating.
