Harriet Rhea Cooper, 93, of Moro, passed away at 10:56 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Eden Village in Glen Carbon.
She was born June 10, 1922, in Godfrey, the daughter of John J. and Mabel Rhea (Heitzman) Vollmer.
Harriet married her dear husband, Orville H. Cooper, April 4, 1942, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Alton and they celebrated 56 years of marriage until he passed away Aug. 18, 1998.
She was a member of the Moro Presbyterian Church for 68 years and retired from Edwardsville School District after 25 years of service. Harriet worked at the Hamel and Moro/Midway grade schools. She graduated from Temple Hall Business School and took University of Illinois Extension Courses. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, quilting and crafts.
Harriet is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie Rhea and James Smith of Edwardsville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Philip Orville and Lora Lynn Cooper of Dorsey, and David John Cooper of Moro; seven grandchildren and spouses, Nathan (Kimberley) Yates of Western Spring, Natalie Yates of Atlanta, Ga., Mary Beth Cooper Geppert of Bethalto, Barrie Cooper of Memphis, Tenn., Erin Cooper of Louisville, Ky., Jocelyn Cooper Freeman (Ryan) of Edwardsville, and Brittany Cooper Stout (Michael) of St. Charles, Mo.; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Nona Taylor Cooper; a sister, Marilyn L. Parsh; and a brother, Carl John Vollmer.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2016 at Moro Presbyterian Church in Moro with Pastor Marc Wendleton officiating.
Burial will follow at Moro Presbyterian Cemetery.
