Harvey R. Smallie, 87, of Granite City, passed away at 2:50 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Madison, a son of the late Lindon Ray and Shirley Florence (Heaton) Smallie. He married Betty L. (Shearburn) Smallie on Sept. 29, 1945, at the First Baptist Church in Granite City and she passed away on Jan. 19, 2010. Harvey retired from the Granite City Fire Department in 1981 after 20 years and two months of dedicated and faithful service to his community as a fireman. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Granite City. He was a 32nd Degree member of the Granite City Masonic Lodge No. 877, Ainad Shrine and the Egyptian Preceptory L.O.H. DeMolay International. He volunteered 10 years transporting burn victims and their families to Shriner’s Hospital. He also enjoyed his days of working on cars. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry D. and Stephanie Smallie of Fresno, Calif.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Darla L. Stauffer of Thornton, Colo., and Donna L. and Andrew Klopfer of Glen Carbon; four grandchildren and spouses, Todd C. and Brooke Smallie, Brent M. Smallie, April L. Stauffer and Whitney and John Horton; four great-grandchildren, Haley, Gwyneth, Ethan and Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Betty J. Smallie of Granite City; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harold L. Smallie.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, with a fireman’s tribute at 6:30 and Masonic Service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at Irwin Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, with the Rev. Rich Smallie officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
