Helen M. May, 88, of Granite City, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City with her family by her side.
Helen was born on March 2, 1926, in Mill Creek, a daughter to the late Herbert and Edith (Schaefer) Hileman. Helen was a member of Christ Gospel Church in Granite City and a lifelong homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She will be remembered for her love of Christ and all the special times she shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by and will be missed by her son, Keith and (Kim) May of Granite City; daughters, Charlotte and (Bill) Nichols of Granite City, Sharon and (Pastor Rich) Hill of Granite City, Marlene Hannaford of Columbia, Marilyn and (Gary) Poss of Granite City; grandchildren, Brian and (Kim), Nick and (Christie), Phil and (Rebecca), Jason, Danny, Stevie, Ashley and Hailey; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Shelby Hileman of St. Louis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. May, who she married on Feb. 16, 1944; her brothers, Elbert, James and Dave; and her sister, Shirley.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of her life, services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at the funeral home with Pastors Rich Hill and Don Townsend officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials are suggested to the Granite City V.F.W.
