Henry C. “Hank” Potthast, 78, of Highland, died at 12:26 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.
He was born April 11, 1937, in Highland, the son of the late Raymond W. and Emma A. (Lunitz) Potthast. He married Jacqueline “Jackie” Gause on April 7, 1955, in St. Paul Church in Highland. She survives.
Hank was born in Highland. He grew up on the farm north of Highland. He was a 1955 graduate of St. Paul High School. Hank started working for Neubauer’s Meat Market as a sophomore in high school. He worked there until he retired at age 62 in 1999. He sharpened saws as a vocation. Hank enjoyed deer hunting, following his grandchildren’s sporting events and playing cards (euchre and jass). He and his wife enjoyed playing bingo together. Hank always had a large garden. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church in Highland, Meat Cutter Local 534 and former member of Clinton County Pullers Association.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Potthast (nee Gause) of Highland; son, Carl R. “C.P.” (Elizabeth A. “Beth” nee Gehrig) Potthast of Highland; grandchildren, Heather A. and Chris Bruce Potthast of Highland, Tiffany A. and Ryan Zimmerman Potthast of Highland, Brad R. Potthast of Highland and Chad R. Potthast of Highland; great-grandchild, Broady C.R. Bruce of Highland; brother, Edward Potthast of Springhill, Fla.; sister, Martha Talleur of Highland; brother, Ray and Gladys Potthast of Edwardville; three sisters, Mary Gnaedinger of Highland, Theresa Richter of Aviston and Monica Rehkemper of Highland; brother-in-law, Edward Moenster of Highland; sister-in-law, Karen S. Potthast of Highland; three brother-in-laws, James W. and Stacy Gause of Sesser, Fred W. and Leann Gause of Anclaron, S.C., and Vernon Steiner of Grantfork; and two sisters-in-law, Jane E. Landolt of Highland and Doris Gause of Edwardsville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond W. Potthast; mother, Emmas A. Potthast (nee Lunitz); sister, Jeanette M. “Jen” Moenster; two brothers, Jerome Potthast and Paul T. Potthast; two sister-in-laws, Jeanne Potthas and Jean Potthast; five brothers-in-law, Richard Talleur, Vincent Gnaedinger, Jerome Richter, David Rehkemper and Carl L. Gause; three sisters-in-law, Norma Gene Gause, Lois L. Steiner and Betty Lou Balke; two brothers-in-law, Darrell M. Landolt and Rolland W. “ Rollie” Vulliet Jr.; sister-in-law, Carladine Vulliet; and brother-in-law, Harry “Bud” Balke.
Visitation will be 4 until 8 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2016, and 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at Spengel Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at Saint Paul Catholic Church in Highland with Father Pat G. Jakel presiding.
