James “Jim” E. Runge, 85, of Bethalto, passed away at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, at VIP Manor in Wood River with his family by his side.
He was born on June 12, 1929, in Fort Gage, Ill., the son of Ed and Irene (Brown) Runge.
He married Darlene R. Dethrow on Dec. 29, 1947, in Chester. She survives.
Jim served his country in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947 serving in World War II. He was a moldmaker for Owens Illinois Glass for 27 years until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Cottage Hills.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Pam (Bob) Grether of Oconomowoc, Wis., Kathy (Alan) Winslow of Cottage Hills, Lisa (Mike) Johnson of Lexington, Ky., Debra Runge (Kathy Sidwell) of Moro, Mike (Beth) Runge of Jerseyville and Brian Runge of Alton; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his siblings and their spouses, Charles Runge of Eureka, Mont., Faye Downey of Anna, Betty Place of Dewey, Okla., Roger Surman of Barnhart, Mo., Shirley Dunker of Chester, and Linda Shout of Murphysboro; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Michelle Runge; and a brother, Rick Runge.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Cottage Hills with Pastor Matt Gehrke officiating.
Burial will follow at Ellis Grove Cemetery in Ellis Grove, Ill.
