Jerome Thomas “Jerry” Coyle Sr., 84, of Edwardsville, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at 3:25 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
He was born Oct. 24, 1931, on North Grand Avenue by the Old Water Tower in St. Louis, Mo. He was the son of the late John Benjamin and Margaret Ella (Fletcher) Coyle.
He married Lois Catherine (Bischof) on Sept. 12, 1953, in East St. Louis, Ill., and lost the love of his life on Nov. 19, 2007.
Mr. Coyle began working at an early age, selling newspapers on the corners in North St. Louis. He became a successful businessman, and in 1969, along with his brother-in-law, purchased Yelton Supply Company, where they had worked together for many years. He would eventually become the sole owner when his close friend and business partner passed away. For over 45 years, Mr. Coyle was the owner and operator of Metro-East Industrial Supply, later renamed Coyle Mechanical Supply. The United States Marine veteran proudly served his country during the Korean War.
Jerry enjoyed years of family life, traveling with Lois and playing golf with the Sunset Hills Travelers. His well-known love of food was only surpassed by his generosity with others. Lois was the center of his life and he will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by two daughters, Kathleen (Robert) Bone of Collinsville and Melissa Favier of Glen Carbon; five sons, Christopher (Dana Underwood) Coyle, Patrick (Jean) Coyle of Edwardsville, Michael (Angela) Coyle of Glen Carbon, Brian (Jennifer) Coyle of Glen Carbon, and Jerome (Rebecca) Coyle Jr. of Granite City; 15 grandchildren, Jack Levy, Christopher (Kami) Levy, Matthew (Stephanie) Levy, Nathan Levy, Justin Favier, Samantha Favier, Stephanie Coyle, Patrick (Amanda) Coyle Jr., Ashley Coyle, Michael Coyle Jr., Kristen Coyle, Sean Coyle, Christopher McIntyre, Ryan Coyle and Lee Coyle; seven great-grandchildren, Charlie Levy, Scarlett Levy, Aurora Levy, Emma Coyle, Evelyn Coyle, Everett Coyle and Tucker Levy; sister-in-law, Geraldine (Melvin) Roustio of Decatur; brother-in-law, Glen (Bonnie) Bischof of St. Charles, Mo.; dear family friend, Rita A. O’Donnell of Belleville; many nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Coyle and Benjamin Coyle; and three sisters, Patricia Zirnheld, Eileen (Greg) Hughes and Margaret (Sam) DiMatteo.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at The Old Cathedral, 209 Walnut St. in St. Louis, with Father Richard Quirk as celebrant. Private family burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.
