Jerry E. Thompson, 64, of Granite City, born July 31, 1950, in Granite City, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.
Mr. Thompson worked for Granite City Steel as a millwright in the 80-inch hot strip mill for 44 years, retiring in 2014. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam era veteran. He was a member of VFW 1300, Granite City Elks 1063, Italian American Club, SOAR, Steel Workers Local 1899 and St. Elizabeth Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry L. Thompson; and his stepfather, Bob Chilcutt.
Surviving are his wife, Candace R. (nee Ahlers) Thompson, whom he married Oct. 31, 1970, in St. Charles, Mo.; his mother, Nina B. (nee Milam) Chilcutt of Granite City; sons, Jerry (Lori) Thompson Jr. of Troy, Jeff (Tracy) Thompson of Carlinville, and Jason Thompson of Granite City; grandchildren, Blake, Dylan and Karsyn; half brothers, John Thompson of Florence, Ind., and J. Lee Thompson of Cincinnati, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Margaret (Jim) Risk of St. Louis and Dinah (Lou) Risk of Granite City; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Church building fund, Wounded Warriors, or Elks Crippled Children Fund.
Visitation was Friday, July 10, 2015, at Thomas Saksa Funeral Home, Granite City. Funeral services were Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the funeral home with Father Chris Comerford officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Edwardsville.
