Jerry Joseph Pieper, 94, of Granite City, passed away at 4:29 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.
He was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Granite City, a son of the late Ferd and Alice (Lahey) Pieper. Jerry retired in 1981 from the Granite City Post Office after 20 years of service as a mail carrier. The United States Air Force veteran proudly served his country during World War II with the 34th Reconnaissance Squadron. He was a dedicated and faithful member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Tri-Cities Council No. 1013 and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed his many travels throughout life, traveling to five continents and loved his trips to Africa. He had a love of animals and was quite the jokester. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Mary Pieper of Granite City; special niece, Cathy Cassy of Granite City; a sister-in-law, Ann Pieper of Granite City; many other nieces and nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews; and other extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Crawshaw and Dorothy Young; four brothers, infant Paul and Henry, Donald and Ferd Pieper and two sisters-in-law, Evelyn “Lynn” Pieper and Betty Pieper.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, with a prayer service at 5 p.m. and a Chalice Presentation at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015, at the church with Father Chris Comerford as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and may be accepted at the funeral home, www.irwinchapel.com.
