Joan Louise McCulley, 82, of Godfrey, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at 12:26 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Health Center.
She was born Aug. 20, 1931, in East St. Louis, the daughter of Ralph and Ruth (Hutchins) Athey.
She married Robert McCulley on Aug. 6, 1950, and he survives.
Mrs. McCulley was an avid golfer who loved playing bridge and pinochle. She also loved to read. Joan had worked for more than 30 years at Hoagland-Maucker-Bernard-Almeter Law Office. She was a member of Godfrey First United Methodist Church.
In addition to husband, Robert, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Jean McCulley of Bloomington; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Mike Gillson of Godfrey; four siblings and their spouses, Elaine and Al Spizzo of Berwyn, Louis and Jean Athey of Lancaster, Penn., Rose Fandel of Metamora, and Nan Zion of Sterling; four grandchildren, Jocelyn McCulley of Bloomington, Kylen McCulley of Savoy, Jennifer Gillson and Stacy Gillson, both of Godfrey; and a great-granddaughter, Lydia Mae McCulley of Bloomington.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca McCulley; and two brothers-in-law, Phil Fandel and Richard Zion.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. until a Celebration of Life Service is held at 11 a.m. at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey. Pastor Don Long will officiate.
Burial will take place in Valhalla Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Godfrey First United Methodist Church.
