JoAnn Hamel, 80, of East Alton, passed away at 11:02 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015, at her residence.
Born on Dec. 30, 1934, in Galveston Island, Texas, she was the daughter of Stephen and Josephine (Marchesi) Kotlarich.
JoAnn had been a teacher and substitute teacher in the Alton School District before serving as music director at Cherry Street Baptist Church and then Congregational Church. She also performed with the “Sweet Adelines”.
On June 7, 1957, in Galveston, she married Ivan “Fred” Hamel. He died March 15, 2002.
Surviving are a son, John (Tamara) Hamel of Dittmer, Mo.; daughter, Mary Hamel of Edwardsville; two grandchildren, Brittani (Bill) Sheldon and Clint (Samantha) Hamel; four great-grandchildren, Elayna and Sydney Sheldon, and Elysa and Alice Hamel; brother, Stephen Kotlarich of LaMarque, Texas; and two sisters, Mary Mezzino of Galveston, Texas, and Camille King of LaMarque, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, William and Henry Tiechman; and three sisters, Artie Cappolino, and two in infancy.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at McGee Chapel Cemetery near Glenallen, Mo. The Rev. Gary Mossiman will officiate.
Memorials may be made to Wanda United Methodist Church, where she had been a member.
