John G. Smith, 87, of Glen Carbon, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at Eden Village in Glen Carbon.
He was born Oct. 27, 1927, in East St. Louis, a son to the late George and Florence (Silch) Smith.
John was a dedicated lineman at Southwestern Bell, Illinois Bell and AT&T, serving more than 38 years until his retirement in 1990. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon; was a proud member of the CWA (Communications Workers of America); former member of the Belleville Elks Lodge; was very active in youth sports, coaching as well as being past president of the New Athens Khoury League Baseball. In his free time John enjoyed spending his time at his cabin on Governor Bond Lake and watching the St. Louis Cardinals, the Blues and the Rams. He will be remembered for his kind heart and the special times he shared with his family and friends.
He is survived by and will be missed by his daughter, Julie and (Steve) Keil of Glen Carbon; grandsons, Joshua Keil of Glen Carbon and Alec Keil of Glen Carbon; brother, Raymond and (Donna) Smith of Goreville; sister, Betty Usher of Garland, Texas; brother-in-law, Leo Jerome of Swansea; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce (Wolf) Smith, whom he married on Aug. 8, 1953, and his sister, Ellen Selig.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, with a prayer service at 4:30 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon. In celebration of his life, funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 155 N. Main St. in Glen Carbon with Fr. Al Allen officiating. Burial will follow with military rites at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights. Memorials are suggested to Southern Illinois Hospice, St. Cecilia Catholic Church or Eden Village.
