John J. Straubinger, 91, of Granite City, passed away at 5:03 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2015, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
He was born Sept. 16, 1923, in Granite City, a son of the late Jacob B. and Mary (Kreher) Straubinger.
He married Theresa Antonette (Berndt) Straubinger on Nov. 25, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maplewood, Mo., and she passed away on Feb. 14, 2008.
John retired in 1986 from McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis after 32 years of dedicated service as a planner. He was a lifelong dedicated and faithful member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Men’s Club and served as an usher, lector and on the finance committee. He also had served as the treasurer of the St. Elizabeth Credit Union for 25 years. John was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Tri-Cities Council and had served as a Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He attended H.O.P.E. and enjoyed reunions with members of the Cathedral High School Class of 1943. John enjoyed working with wood, camping, fishing and tending to his flower gardens.
He is survived by his five children and their spouses, Mary Ann Williams of Granite City, Frank Straubinger of Granite City, Vincent and Stacey Straubinger of Troy, Delores and Jeffrey Stoicheff of Sinking Spring, Penn., and Loretta and Dennis Joyce of Granite City; seven grandchildren, Steven and Michelle Williams, Blake Straubinger, Sarah Stoicheff, Hannah Stoicheff, Meagan Joyce, Michael Joyce and Melanie Joyce; four great-grandchildren, John Williams, Elizabeth Williams, Luke Williams and Rachel Williams; other extended family and many friends.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Lydia Straubinger; and a stepbrother, Henry Jackstedt.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, with a Chalice Presentation at 7 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 2300 Pontoon Road in Granite City.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, with Father Chris Comerford as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.
