John James Von Nida Jr., 56, of Granite City, passed away at 2:58 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2015, at his home.
He was born Nov. 3, 1958 in Granite City, the son of the late John James and Nora K. (Williams) Von Nida Sr.
He married Mary Jo (Decker) Von Nida on July 31, 1982, at the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granite City and she survives.
John retired from Paul Cerame Ford in Florissant with 25 years of dedicated service as a mechanic. He was also the owner and operator of Ultimate Floor Care for 15 years. He had a special love of remote control airplanes and helicopters and was President of the Midwest Air Wing RC Club. He cherished his grandchildren and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife of 33 years, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Brian Laubscher of Granite City and Erin and Adam Jones of Granite City; five grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Brandon, Amelia, Olivia and Ellie; one granddaughter on the way; sister, Phyllis McCormick of Florissant, Mo.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Bobbie and Larry Unfried of Granite City, John and Ann Decker of Republic, Mo., Bertha and Richard Koerper of Granite City and Maggi and Ed Dettwiler of Granite City; his beloved dogs, Roxy, Zeus and Lola; many nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Joseph Von Nida; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Willie Decker.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City with Father Jeff Holtman officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorials may be made to the Granite City APA and may be accepted at the funeral home, www.irwinchapel.com.
