Johnnie H. Curtis, 77, of Bethalto, passed away at 2:22 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at his residence in Warwick, Md.
He was born in Hartford on Jan. 3, 1939, the son of the late John and Ellen Ann “Nellie” (Clifford) Curtis.
On Sept. 9, 1964, he married Sharon Bruntjen in Baltimore, Md. She survives.
His career began with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, then serving as Vice President of Intermodal for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, Chicago; and Matlack Trucking, Wilmington, Del. Johnnie was also a civil engineer for Cecil County, Md. He had his Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He was a graduate of the executive program from the University of Michigan. He took management theory and practice at the University of Missouri. He was also a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at the Park Forrest Baptist Church in Chicago.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Brett (Barbara) Curtis of Quarryville, Penn., Dawn (Michael) Wright of Warwick, Md., and Beth (Darrell) Helton of Warwick, Md.; six grandchildren, Emma, Madelyn and Sarah Curtis, and Jillian and Logan Wright, and Savannah Helton; and one sister, “Susie” Ellen Ann Hubbard of Bethalto.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marcella Compagno and Betty Cox.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites given by Alton VFW Post 1308.
