Joseph M. Valdes Sr. II, 87, of Wood River, passed away at 4:12 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Sept. 18, 1927, in Alton, the son of Joseph and Amanda (Fernandes) Valdes I.
He was formerly married to Verla Orban. She preceded him in death.
Joe served his country in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1951 to 1955 as an airman first class. He worked as a laborer in the wire mill at Laclede Steel in Alton for 30 years, until his retirement on March 1, 1986. He enjoyed doing home improvements, old cars and animals.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Louis and Ginny Valdes of Wood River, Ralph and Angela Valdes of Wood River, John J. Valdes of Rosewood Heights and Janice Valdes Sasik; grandchildren, Christina (Cody) Vannoy, Eric Valdes, Amanda (Quinton) Ebbeler, Brad Valdes, Tina (James) Mathenia, Angel (Matt) Greeling, Joseph Valdes IV, Rafiel Valdes, Brittany Valdes, Cory Valdes, Matt, Slagg, Crystal (Scott) Stride, and Mellisa Valdes, Amie Valdes and Rebecca Sasik; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Alfred Valdes of Alton and Fred and Beverly Valdez of Godfrey; several nieces and nephews and a lifetime friend, Dorthy Kemp.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph J. Valdes III.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Father Tom Liebler officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites given by Alton VFW Post 1308.
