Kathryn “Kaye” Sykes, 73, of Granite City, passed away at 2:22 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
She was born April 20, 1941, in Cadiz, Ky., a daughter of the late Horace Alton and Myrtlene (Gray) Cunningham. She married Shirley W. Sykes on June 1, 1957, in Cadiz, Ky., and he passed away on June 29, 1993.
Kaye worked in day care with children with more than 20 years of dedicated and loving care. She loved her years of reading many books and enjoyed playing the piano in church. She was a faithful and dedicated member of the former First Church of the Nazarene in Pontoon Beach. She was always chatting on the phone with family and friends, cherished her grandchildren, who were the lights of her life, and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Pam Sykes of Granite City; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Fritz Nemsky of Granite City; three grandchildren, Zachary Sykes, Dylan Sykes and Brian Nemsky; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joyce and Vernon Hale of Bowling Green, Ky., and Pam Witty of Cerulean, Ky.; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Waymon Cunningham of Clarksville, Tenn., Alton and Penny Cunningham of Benton, Ky., and Rick Cunningham of Cadiz, Ky.; many nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends. In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Nemsky; and a brother, Wayne Cunningham.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights.
