Larry J. Jones, 75, of Alton, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Rockbridge on July 28, 1939, the son of the late Lowell and Frances (Long) Jones. He graduated from Alton High in 1957 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served from 1957-60. He enjoyed much success as both a Golden Glove boxer, as well as the starting tailback on the Marine Corps football team.
Larry was a salesman for Pepsi-Cola for many years before retiring to the golf course.
He is survived by two sons, Darrin Jones (fiancée, Jayme) of Godfrey, Jeff “Dude” (Jamie) Jones of Godfrey; one daughter, Kerri Watson (significant other, Kortney Griffy) of Godfrey; eight grandchildren, Cody, Halee, Hanna, Baeden, Brooke, Josie, Emma and Grace; one sister, Nancy Marie Jones of Hazelwood, Mo.; one brother, Ronald Jones of Alton; and his lifelong friend, Sandy White.
A memorial visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to the 5A’s Animal Shelter.
There will be an open house at Tony’s Ranch House in Godfrey from 2 to 6 p.m. immediately following visitation.
