Lela Mae Hendrix, 81, of Granite City, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Eden Village in Glen Carbon.
She was born on Feb. 20, 1934, in Nebo, a daughter to the late Loren and Verna (Allison) Willman. Lela gave more than 21 years as a checker at Kroger Grocery Store in Granite City, was a clerk at Nine West Shoes and worked at J.J. Calico. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebekkah Lodge and attended City Temple in Granite City. Most importantly she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by her entire family and all that knew her.
She is survived by and will be missed by her children, Kathy and (Robert) Knezevich of Edinburg, Mike Hendrix of Granite City, Chris Hendrix of Edinburg, and Lisa and (Jeff) Henry of Granite City; grandchildren, Alissa and (Mike) Lipchick, Nathan and (Elena) Knezevich, Crystal and (Rick) Lechner, Meridith and (Jake) Rebbe, Marissa Henry, Ralph Thomas and (fiancée Courtney), Samuel Henry, and Dawn Harris; great-grandchildren, Natalie Rebbe, Collin Rebbe, Hannah Lipchick, Sophie Lipchick, Abigail Lipchick, Phoebe Lipchick and Edgar Knezevich; sisters, Betty Barnette; twin sisters, Lena Thomas and Loretta Siepp; and brothers, Jack and (Marianne) Willman, Ronnie and (Melveen) Willman.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jimmie Hendrix, whom she married on Aug. 21, 1952; her brother, Grant Willman; and her daughter-in-law, Wanda Hendrix.
In celebration of her life, friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015, at City Temple, 4751 Maryville Road in Granite City, with Pastor Rich Cope officiating. Burial will follow at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights. Memorials are suggested to City Temple or the Alzheimer’s Association. Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, is serving the family.
