Leland Duane Ambuehl, 94, of Granite City, passed away at 3:55 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.
He was born May 28, 1922, in Highland, a son of the late Elmer and Edna (Klaus) Ambuehl. He married the love of his life, Venka G. (Georgieff) Ambuehl, on Dec. 15, 1945, in Granite City and she survives. He retired in 1982 from the United States Army Material Command after many years of dedicated service as a supervisory supply cataloger. The World War II veteran proudly served his country with the United States Army Air Corps and was a recipient of a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Stars along with numerous other service medals and recognitions. Leland was a dedicated and faithful member of Sts. Cyril and Methody Eastern Orthodox Church in Granite City. He served his community for 27 years as a Granite City Police and Fire Commissioner and was a life member of the American Legion Post No. 113 in Granite City. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. and Tamora Ambuehl of Granite City; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn A. and Joseph Hassler of Panama City, Fla.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Stephanie E. and Cory Simpson of Philadelphia, Pa., Jennifer E. and Jonathan Petri of Woodbridge, Va., Rebecca E. and Kenneth Jackson of Granite City, Jessica E. and Jonathan Barisano of Orlando, Fla., and Kaci E. and Lucas Tucker of San Antonio, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Joseph “Trent” Barisano, Anastasia Petri and Jacob Barisano; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Hassler; a brother, Lester Ambuehl; and a half-brother, Eldon Ambuehl.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at Sts. Cyril and Methody Eastern Orthodox Church, 4770 Maryville Road in Granite City, with a Panikhida service at 7 p.m.
A Divine Liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, at the church with the Rev. Andrew Moulton officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials may be made to Sts.
