Leona A. Smith, 79, of Glen Carbon, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at her home with her family at her side.
She was born Aug. 16, 1936, in Glen Carbon, a daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Skach) Houba. She married Charles E. “Charlie” Smith Jr. on Nov. 21, 1955, at the Meadow Heights Baptist Church in Collinsville and he survives. Leona was a faithful and loving homemaker who was dedicated to her family and her home. She was a member of the Glen Carbon Historical Society. Leona was an excellent cook and enjoyed needlepoint and had a special love of butterflies.
In addition to her beloved husband of 60 years, she is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dave and Tammy Smith of Glen Carbon, Randy Smith of Glen Carbon, and Charles “Chuck” and Mary Ann Smith of Glen Carbon; five grandchildren, Kelly Smith, Dana Smith, Danielle and Joe Heffernan, Miranda Smith and Rachel Smith; a great-granddaughter, Payton Plummer; two sisters-in-law, Martha and Jerry Solis of Beckemeyer and Joann and Bill Leslie of Beckemeyer; one brother-in-law, Bill and Susan Smith of Canton, Ga.; special nephew, Ben Smith of Canton, Ga.; other extended family and many friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Chuck and Frank Houba.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be 11 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon with the Rev.
