Leona Virginia Rose Griffin, 94, of Granite City, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Fountain View Manor in Granite City.
She was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Granite City, a daughter of the late George E. and Helen Iva (Burgess) Bayer. She married Harry S. Griffin in 1942 in Jacksonville, Fla., and he passed away in 2003. Leona retired as a supervisor in 1986 from Motorola after 30 years of dedicated service. She was a dedicated member of Hope Lutheran Church in Granite City. She loved her years spent living in Phoenix, Ariz., and enjoyed her days of quilting. She was a generous and giving person and loved her many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by a sister, Alma Barnhart of Arkansas; nieces and nephews, Barbara Phelps, Charles Bayer, Robert Bayer, John Kudelka, Scott Kudelka, Chuck Burnett, Jesse Burnett, Jeffery Burnett and Jimmy Barnhart; many great-nieces and great- nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to her beloved husband of 62 years and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother, Helen Kudelka, Dorothy Kowalk, Eleanor Sparks, Hattie Luella Bayer and George Bayer.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at Hope Lutheran Church in Granite City with the Rev. Alan Beuster officiating.
