Mrs. Lois Marie (Dirksmeyer) Edwards, 87, of Alton, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at the Bethalto Care Center.
Mrs. Edwards, longtime resident of Alton and affectionately known as “The Ice Cream Lady” by many Alton residents and children, passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was in the care of Bethalto Care Center at the time of her death. She had recent visits from her children and was surrounded by family at the time of her death. She was retired from St. Anthony’s Hospital and spent many years working as an usher at the Fox Theater in St. Louis as well as volunteering for several organizations which assisted others. She was a strong woman who affected many lives.
Mrs. Edwards was born in Longmont, Colo., to William and Bertha Dirksmeyer. Her mother passed away in 1935 when Lois was a small girl at the age of 8.
After her mother’s death the family returned to Kampsville area until Lois moved to Alton at the age of 14.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bertha; father, William of Columbia, Mo.; brother, Robert of Arizona; sisters, Lucille of Alton and Nina of Kansas City; brother, Leroy of Columbia, Mo.; and a granddaughter, Megan.
She is survived by one sister, Dora (Marlin) Ragain of Gladstone, Mo.; four sons, Steve (Jane) of Marshalltown, Iowa; Dennis (Dawn) of Moro, Ron (Lecretia) of Trinidad, Colo., Gary (Sheri) of Marshalltown, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Aaron, Nichole, Tracy, Nathan, Chris, Mallory, Jake and Brittney, six stepgrandchildren, Mike, Melissa, Abe, Erin, Chrissy, and Von; 12 great-grandchildren, Breyden, Lydia, Ansley, Emery, Shaely, Ethan, Crystal, Sierra, Dawsin, Mackenzie, Tyler and Grace; seven stepgreat-grandchildren, Sophia, Emma, Mark, Ivey and Bena and Lavon; several nieces and nephews, one being Mike Dirksmeyer, whom she raised after his mother, Lucille, passed away when he was 15.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton with Pastor Martin Schultz officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton.
