Louis “Lou” Gregory Sabo, age 86, of Godfrey, died Monday, May 25, 2015, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born Nov. 27, 1928, in East St. Louis, the son of Louis J. and Elizabeth (Oros) Sabo. He married Joyce Bowman on Aug. 1, 1953, at St. Patrick’s Church in Alton and she survives.
He was a graduate of Marquette Catholic High School and Quincy University. Lou served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a lifetime member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post No. 126 in Alton, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus in Alton. Lou was very involved in youth athletics, having served as a coach, scorekeeper and many other roles. He also enjoyed being a member of the Antique Car Club of Alton. Lou will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Joyce; he is survived by four children and their spouses, Lynn Sabo of Alton, Gregory and Theresa Sabo of College Station, Texas, Mark and Anne Sabo of Alton, and Jay and June Sabo of Foothill Ranch, Calif.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Meggan and Michael Schoen of Godfrey, Matthew Sabo of Texas, Gwen Sabo of Alton, and Ethan Sabo of Alton; two step-grandchildren, Haili Culp of Alton, and Alicia and Jason Simmons of Mobile, Ala.; one great-grandchild, Sean Prather of Godfrey; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Irene Springman.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until a time of remembrance at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton. Military burial rites will be held at 7 p.m. and will be provided by the Alton VFW Post No. 1308.
