Mary A. “Frankie” Smith, 93, of Roxana, passed away at 6:10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at St. Clare’s Hospital in Alton.
She was born on July 12, 1921, in McClure, the daughter of the late Byron and Alma (Giles) Stone.
She married Herman M. Smith on April 24, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo., and he preceded her in death in 1999.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Larry McMichael of Wood River; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Mary Etta Smith of Taylorville, Jim and Jennifer Smith of Roxana; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Lisa Smith, Jill McMillan, Rachel and Peter Johnson, Amy and Brian Paul, Stacy and Jason John, Matt Smith, Emily Pechacek, and Jessica Smith; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Wolverton of Villa Grove.
Mary was formerly employed as an ammunition maker at Western Cartridge Company. She worked at the St. Louis Ordnance and at McCory’s as a clerk for 17 years. She was involved with the Home Extension for 30 years. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Hartford.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard; and two sisters, Verna Gates and Delaine Huddleston.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at the funeral home. The Rev. Frank Sparks will officiate. Burial will follow at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana.
