Mary E. Simpkins-Chavours, 70, of Alton, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at OSF Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton.
She was born Sept. 4, 1945, in Zeigler, Ill., the daughter of Albert and Mary (Farkas) Simpkins.
She married Jesse E. Chavours in June of 1998 in Alton and he preceded her in death in August of 2013.
Mary had worked at Midtown Restaurant as a cook for many years. She then became a lab technician at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Granite City, and then at St. Anthony’s Health Care Center in Alton.
Mary loved cooking, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed going to amusement parks and had a genuine zest for life. Mary loved all animals. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Jesse Mae Chavours of Alton; two stepsons, Dwight Chavours of Chicago and Daryl Chavours of Springfield; two stepdaughters, Desmalene Chavours of Chicago and Michelle Chavours of Chicago; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; a sister; a brother; and many other friends and relatives.
In addition to her husband, Jesse, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, at the funeral home.
Burial will take place in Upper Alton Cemetery.
