Mary E. O’Donnell, 95, of Godfrey, passed away Monday, May 4, 2015, at Provision Living in Godfrey.
She was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Hardin, the daughter of Thomas X. and Dorothea (Godar) O’Donnell. She had attended Grafton grade schools and was one of the oldest graduates of Marquette Ursuline Academy. She then graduated from SIU Carbondale and received a Master’s Degree from Saint Louis University. She became a teacher, and eventually, the Superintendent of Schools during her 40 years working for the U.S. Air Force in Japan and Europe.
She is survived by four nieces, Katheleen Atkinson of Foley, Ala., Judith Zimmer of Chicago, Cynthia Tranquilli of Fort Worth, Texas, and Margaret (O’Donnell) Carrow and husband, Martin Carrow, of Godfrey; and a nephew, Thomas P. O’Donnell of Grafton; and her special friend, Rianna, her pet poodle and faithful companion for seven years.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Thomas O’Donnell.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey with Fr. Steve Pohlman officiating.
Burial will take place in Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton.
Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice.
