Mary Iona Crum, 81, of Lake Villa, Ill., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at her daughter’s home with family by her side.
Born April 11, 1934, she was the daughter of William Otis and Ruth (Smay) Releford.
She married Ivan Crum May 5, 1955, in Alton. He died Nov. 15, 1997.
A homemaker while raising her family, she went on to attend Passavant Nursing School, earning a Licensed Practical Nursing certificate in 1990. She then worked in a nursing home in Mount Sterling.
She and Ivan were farmers and were avid lovers of animals. They shared farms in both Brown and Grundy counties. On weekends, they enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and showing rabbits at rabbit shows across the Midwest. Mary enjoyed raising animals throughout her life. Her children and grandchildren speak of her various collection of birds, guinea pigs, fish, rabbits and dogs over the years. One thing was for sure, if a grandchild wanted to take home a new pet from grandma’s newest collection, they left the house with the pet and all the accessories needed.
Surviving are two sons, John Crum and Gary (Sharon) Crum; daughter, Dianna (John) Haines; 10 grandchildren, John Crum Jr., Rachel (Phillip) Hargis, Melanie (Lucas) Lammers, Heather Crum, Beth (John) Massey, Kayli Iona Haines, Stormy Ray Lopez, Eddie Jackson, Charles Tyler and Connie (Eric) Belcher; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Hancock.
Preceding in death were her parents; husband; and an infant granddaughter, Melissa Mary Crum.
