Mike Mecava, 94, of Granite City, passed away at 1:40 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.
He was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Udbina, Yugoslavia, a son of the late Mike and Rose (Novacic) Mecava Sr.
He married Marie T. (Obucina) Mecava in 1951 in Madison and she passed away on April 8, 1999.
Mike retired in 1985 from the Department of Defense after 40 years of service as a cartographer. The U.S. Army veteran proudly served his country during World War II. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Granite City and a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union. He enjoyed his many days of traveling, tending to his home and was very devoted to his family. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
He is survived by a son, Michael L. Mecava of Granite City; his daughter and son-in-law, Jean M. and Joseph Wilcox of Woodstock, Conn.; two grandchildren, Joseph G. Wilcox and Catherine M. Wilcox, both of Woodstock, Conn.; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Gregory J. Mecava and one brother, Louis Mecava.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Granite City with Father Chris Comerford as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and may be accepted at the funeral home. www.irwinchapel.com
