Mike Motil Jr., 89, of Granite City, passed away at 10:14 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Granite City, the son of the late Michael and Margaret (Dorko) Motil Sr. He married Josephine D. (Stefanac) Motil on July 2, 1949, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Madison, and she survives.
He retired in 1987 from Granite City Steel after 32 years of dedicated service as a steelworker. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country during World War II. He was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City, where he served as an usher for 50 years. He was a member of the First Catholic Slovak Union, the United Steelworkers Local No. 30 and the AMVETS Post No. 204 in Madison. He loved his days of tending to his vegetable garden, his yard and his home. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife of 65 years, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Beverly Motil III of Glen Carbon and Ron and Catherine Motil of Maryville; five grandchildren, Michele, Ashley, Katie, Benjamin and Gregory Motil; other extended family and many friends.
In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Motil; and five sisters, Ann Motil, Helen Wagner, Mary Gnojewski, Margaret Duncan and Dorothy Bell.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 2801 Madison Ave. in Granite City. A funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, with Father Jeff Holtman as celebrant. Burial with full military honors will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
