Mildred Miller, 86, died peacefully at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at Willow Rose Nursing Home in Jerseyville, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Mildred Clara Dresel on Aug. 28, 1929, in Freeburg, Mo., the daughter to Louis and Ida (Schneider) Dresel. She completed school until the 10th grade. When she left home she went to work as a nursing assistant at St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City, Mo. She worked for a family-owned dry cleaners, where she met her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Leora McCrea. She married Alman L. Miller on Sept. 3, 1951, at St. Peter’s Church in Jefferson City, Mo. They moved to Alton, where Alman’s parents were living, and went to work at Wardein Dry Cleaners until the birth of John. She remained a homemaker until Alman’s death on June 21, 1988. She then went to work at Saint Anthony’s Health Center as a housekeeper on OB until she retired in 2000 to care for her grandchild, Sam, then Anna two years later. She was known for her gardening, especially her tomatoes and flowers, her homemade pies, quilting, crocheting, and she was an avid reader, and of course, a Cardinals fan!
She is survived by four children, John (Anne) Miller of Hyattsville, Md., James (Cathy) Miller of Godfrey, Julie Miller of Alton, and Joseph (Sheila) Miller of Kirkwood, Mo.; grandchildren, Margaret Miller, Kateri Miller, Marie-Therese Miller, Thomas Miller, Jason (Janice) Hooper, Teresa (Joe) Pisciotta, Joshua (Laura) Hooper, Jordan Watkins, Chelsea Watkins, Samuel Miller and Anna Miller; and great-grandchildren, Logan, Caden, Emily and Joshua; a sister, Stella Brewer of Westphalia, Mo.; a brother and sister-in-law; William and Dorothy Dresel of Freeburg, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Alice Miller of San Mateo, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan; and in-laws, Leora and Mose McCrea, Otis Miller, Marvin Miller and Nelson Brewer.
Visitation will be 4p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 15, at Staten, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, with the chanting of the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with Fr. John Paul Klein, OMV, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Alton.
