Nina Choate Gilbert, 87, of Godfrey, died on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016, at Alton Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in a fall on Jan. 9, 2016.
Born in Augusta, Maine, on Aug. 2, 1928, she was the only child of Linwood F. and Marion L. (Haskell) Choate.
She married George Glenn Gilbert on June 30, 1948, in Augusta, Maine. He died Jan. 21, 1980.
A graduate of Cony High School (Augusta, Maine), she lived in Augusta the first 72 years of her life. A devoted homemaker and mother while her children were growing up, she was deeply involved in their activities, serving as a Scout den mother and troop leader and a volunteer with Augusta General Hospital, SCORE and VITA. She was a member of the D.A.R. and the South Parish Congregational Church.
In September 2000, she moved to Godfrey, where she had a craft booth (“Nina’s of Maine”) at Weathered Treasures Mall, selling her handmade items. She learned to knit, crochet and sew at an early age, and these skills plus counted cross stitch and quilting brought her a lifetime of enjoyment. Recently she knitted or crocheted more than 1,200 newborn hats that she donated to Alton Memorial Hospital, with the final batch of 39 hats donated just minutes before her fall.
Surviving is one son, Robert B. Gilbert (Mary) of Berwick, Maine; two daughters, Linda G. Davenport, Ph.D., SPHR (Al), of Godfrey, and Kathryn Maietta Harrington, LCSW ( David) of Hampden, Maine; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
In keeping with her wishes, her body will be cremated, and there will be no visitation or memorial service. Her ashes will be buried next to her husband’s at Mount Hope Cemetery in Augusta, Maine. The burial will be private. Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Five A’s Humane Society (4530 N. Alby, Godfrey, Illinois), first home of her feline companion, “Mikey”; or to a charity of the giver’s choice.
