Nina Mae Volkmar of Granite City, formerly of Pocahontas, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016, at the Fountain View Manor Nursing Home in Granite City, having attained the age of 83 years and 5 months.
Born on Nov. 23, 1932, in Pocahontas, she was the daughter of Howard F. and Iola Mae Clayton (nee Hussey). She was united marriage to Walter Volkmar on Feb. 17, 1951, in Carbondale and he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2013.
Mrs. Volkmar was a retail clerk and member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Granite City.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Walter Volkmar; and her brother, Morris P. Clayton.
Surviving are her children, Carol Ann (Gary) Sturdivant of Granite City and Forrest Alan “Butch” Volkmar of Worden; her grandchildren, Chris (Hollie) Sturdivant and Greg Sturdivant; and three great-grandchildren, Emma Sturdivant, Will Sturdivant and Evelyn “Evie” Sturdivant.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful staff and residents of Fountain View Memory Manor in Granite City, who loved and cared for Nina.
Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice in Fairview Heights, any animal rescue or an organization of one’s choice.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, May 6, 2016, at the Thomas Saksa Funeral Home, 2205 Pontoon Beach Road in Granite City.
A memorial service will follow at noon at the funeral home.
