Norietta M. “Rita” Blum, 77 of Granite City, passed away on Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with her family by her side.
Rita was born on Oct. 17, 1937, in East St. Louis, a daughter to the late Leonard and Rose (Joiner) Birchler. Rita was the longtime secretary at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Rita loved flowers, Christmas time and spending time with her family. She will be remembered for her unique sense of humor and all the special times she shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by and will be missed by her life companion, David Grindstaff; daughter, Lynn and (Mark) Wilson of Granite City; sons, Mitchell Blum of Granite City, David and (Shannon) Blum of Troy, Ill.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Jerry Birchler of Maryville, and Larry Birchler of Dallas, Texas.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Blum and her son, Wayne Birchler.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of her life, services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at the funeral home with Pastor Clint Wisdom officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
