Opal Marie Thompson, 86, of Granite City, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born March 15, 1929, in Big Jowles, Ark., a daughter to the late Wesley and Grace (Forshee) Branch.
Opal was a machinist for National Vendors and worked for NESCO in Granite City. She was a member of Calvary Life Church in Granite City and was the “Boss” of her family. Opal enjoyed her roses that she planted all over her yard and was an A-1 babysitter. Opal was a mentor that set an example of a good Christian woman. Most of all she loved her family and will be remembered for all the special times they shared together.
She is survived by and will be missed by her husband of nearly 60 years, Wesley Thompson, whom she married on April 24, 1956; her daughter, Brenda and (Bob) Murray of Granite City; grandchildren, Cindy and (John) Grant, Bobbie and (Karen) Murray, Vicki and (Russell) English, Carrie and (Ed) Lemmon, Melissa and (Richard) Reader, and Cari and (Brian) Palmisano; 13 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, Opal was preceded in death by her daughters, Barbara Ann Alger and Judy Albena Alger; and three brothers and sisters.
In celebration of her life, friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29, 2016, with Pastor Paul P.J. Martin officiating at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials are suggested to Calvary Life Church, 4650 Maryville Road in Granite City.
