Oscar B. “Pete” Whitworth, 81, of Granite City, passed away on Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City surrounded by his family.
Pete was born on Jan. 19, 1934, in Clinton, Ark., a son of the late William T. and Myrtle L. (Burns) Whitworth. Pete was a machinist for over 34 years at Olin Corporation until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of New Testament Baptist Church for over 50 years and proudly served his country in the United States Army. In his free time Pete enjoyed watching western movies and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by and will be missed by his wife, Mary E. (Fowler) Whitworth, whom he married on Sept. 29, 1956; his children, Sharon and (Terry) Soncasie of Valmeyer, Ill., Douglas Whitworth of Bathgate, N.D., Pastor Paul and (Marlena) Whitworth of Plymouth, Ind., Carol Kaminski of Granite City; 15 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Edna Wallace of Parma, Mo., and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
In celebration of his life friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at noon Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City with Pastor Paul Whitworth officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to New Testament Baptist Church, 1718 Northwinds Drive, Waterloo, IL 62298.
