Peter G. Butkovich, 94, of Wood River, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, at his home, with his family at his side.
He was born April 2, 1921, in Wood River, the son to the late Joseph J. and Mary Butkovich. He married Dorothy “Eloise” Evans Feb. 7, 1948. Peter proudly served his country during WWII from 1939-1945 with the United States Coast Guard. He was involved in six invasions; one of which was D-Day at Omaha Beach, Normandy. He worked at Standard Oil for 18 years and with the Boilermakers St. Louis Local 27 for 20 years. He and Eloise enjoyed attending his USS Samuel Chase Ship reunions, which were held yearly at various places around the United States. Peter was a member of the Wood River VFW and the Wood River Moose.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eloise Butkovich of Wood River; son, James Butkovich of Wood River; daughter, Nancy (Dave) Ringering of Lake Wylie, S.C.; two grandchildren, Derek (Kelly) Ringering of Charlotte, N.C., and Rachel (Michael) Wasserman of Rock Hill, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Olivia Wasserman, and a brother, Steve Butkovich of Wood River.
He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings, Mike, John, Thomas, Ben, Paul, Anna, Joe and Matt Butkovich.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Father James Flach as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Woodland Hill Cemetery in East Alton. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Masses at Holy Family Catholic Church. Online guestbook available at www.paynicfh.com.
