Ralph L. Johnson, 89, Alton passed away at 4:55 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, at the Bethalto Care Center.
He was born on Jan. 22, 1926, in Alton, the son of the late William F. and Lucille (Tosh) Johnson.
Ralph married Arlene (Coons) Johnson on Dec. 25, 1949, in Alton; she preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 2006.
Ralph served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and WWII; he was a self-employed barber working behind the Bon Air and the Village in Upper Alton. He was a former member of the Main Street Methodist Church in Alton, the Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 25 in Alton and the VFW Post 1308. He enjoyed hunting, bowling and playing cards, especially pinochle. His greatest joy was spending time with family, friends and his puppy, Tippy.
He is survived by two children, Mary Rios and Sharon Fairchild and her spouse, Bruce; 10 grandchildren, Jason Mitchell, Christopher Nichols, Brian Mitchell, Todd Gregory, Cory Nichols, James Condon, Joshua Mitchell, Ryan Condon, Alexis Campbell and her spouse, Mark, and Andrea Grizzle and her spouse, Cary; 10 great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Taylor, Shari, Hayden, Rylee, Owen, Jacob, Joshua, Mark and Carter; and two sisters, Norma Glassbrenner of St. Louis and Barbara Reardon of Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents, spouse and son, Gregory Johnson.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton. Masonic rites will be given by the Franklin Lodge No. 25 at 6 p.m.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, with the Rev. Pastor Charles West officiating.
Burial will follow at the Upper Alton Cemetery in Alton, with full military rites by the Alton VFW Post 1308.
