Richard “Rick” Ray Evans, 77, of Bethalto, passed away at 12:05 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, in Edwardsville with his daughter by his side.
He was born on Nov. 18, 1937, in South Roxana, the son of Harry Von and Clara (Drennan) Evans.
Rick served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman for six years. He retired from SIUE, where he worked in building service for 25 years. He also worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad as a security guard. He was a member of the Bethalto Church of God and the Glen Carbon American Legion. He enjoyed swimming, fishing, all kind of sports, music and played the organ and other instruments. He wrote poetry and had one of his poems, “Old Glory,” published in the “Great Poems of the Western World.”
He is survived by a daughter, Eura Kay (John) Yates of Bethalto; grandchildren, Tyler Yates and Hannah Rose Yates of Meadowbrook; two sisters, Frances (Jerry) Beasley of Bowling Green, Ky., and Mary Ann (Phillip) Doellar of Glen Carbon; and his nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harry Evans Jr. and Bob Evans; and two sisters, Zella Mae Layton and Betty Knoche.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, at the funeral home with Pastor Jonathan Absher officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites given by Alton VFW Post 1308.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, “NAMI” National Association for Mental Illness or Wounded Warriors.
