Richard “Dick” L. Largen, 80, of Bethalto, passed away Friday, March 11, 2016, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born July 11, 1935, in Flora, Ind., the son of the late Wilbur and Dora (Sparks) Largen. He married Gertrud Dallinger on April 10, 1959, in Germany, and she survives.
Mr. Largen was one of the first Green Berets and personally received his beret from President John F. Kennedy. He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. He and Gertrud were well-known for their booth at Goshen Farmer’s Market. Dick was a member of the Alton VFW No. 1308, Illinois Bee Keepers Association and Special Forces Association – Martha Ray Chapter. He loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Gertrud, he is survived by four children and their spouses, Richard “Rick” and Kim Largen of Lakewood, Ill., Juanita and Dave Vautrin of Phoenix, Ariz., Susan Ferguson of Wood River and David Largen of Wood River; five grandchildren, Robert and Allan Largen, Nicholas Salamanchuk, Branden Slayden and Dustin Largen; and a great-granddaughter, Dakota Slayden.
A private family visitation will be held at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
He will be buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Missouri with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to James S. McDonnell USO of St. Louis.
