Rita J. Fairless, 74, of Wood River, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2015, at Alton Rehab and Nursing.
She was born in Wood River on June 22, 1940, the daughter of Roy and Virginia (Kennedy) Heck.
Rita had been a custodian and bus driver in the East Alton Wood River High School District before retiring. She had been an active member of the Women of the Moose Lodge No. 1349, having served as Past Sr. Regent.
On March 16, 1957, in Holly Springs, Miss., she married Gary G. Fairless. He survives.
Surviving also are two sons, Mark (Cathy) Fairless and Terry (Nancy) Fairless, all of Wood River; daughter, Jodi (Ron) Witcher of New Douglas; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Bob (Helen) Heck of Naperville; two sisters, Bonnie Branz of Houston, Texas, Delores Wiseman of Wynne, Ark.; brother-in-law, Bill Fairless of Lakeland, Fla.; sister-in-law, Carol Luketich of Gillespie; several nieces and nephews; and best friend since third grade, Connie Oster.
Preceding in death were her parents; sister, Janice Hill; and daughter-in-law, Tina Elaine Ringering-Fairless.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Pastor Richard Newcom will officiate.
Burial will follow in Woodland Hill Cemetery.
