Robert D. Hargrave, 89, of Edwardsville, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the UnityPoint Health Trinity Rock Island Hospital in Rock Island, Ill.
He was born Dec. 11, 1925, in Flora, a son of the late Clarence Clinton and Clara Eva (Lewis) Hargrave. He married Betty Jane (Atteberry) Hargrave on Sept. 14, 1947, in Cisne, Ill., and she passed away on Nov. 15, 2002. Robert retired in 1991 from McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis after 40 years of dedicated service in tool and die. The U.S. Army veteran proudly served his country during World War II and was the recipient of the Bronze Star and numerous other medals and recognitions. He was a member of the American Legion in Edwardsville and enjoyed his days of traveling. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Beth Hargrave of Edwardsville; two daughters and son-in-law, Sue and Mike Poleet of Kane, and Carol Shoup of Rock Island; son-in-law, Terry McCleary of Milan; five grandchildren and their spouses, Kelly and Jacob Lovelace, Clinton and Rayleigh Hargrave, Kristen Hargrave, Robert and Amanda McCleary, and Michael and Jillian McCleary; three great-grandsons, Samuel, Zachary and Tyler McCleary; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Lynn Hargrave of Milan; one sister, Harriet Bealer of East Moline; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ron Shoup; and a sister and brother-in-law, Bettie and Charles Jackson.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon, on Saturday, May 16, 2015, from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at noon with the Rev. Charles West officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
