Robert R. Lewis, 86, of Granite City passed away on Thursday, Aug, 28, 2014, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City surrounded by his family.
Robert was born on Dec. 6, 1927, in Granite City, a son to the late Harry and Nellie Mabel (Thompson) Lewis Sr.
He was a welder at A.O. Smith for 25 years, retiring in 1980. Robert was an active member and an ordained deacon since 1955 at Second Baptist Church in Granite City. He was a leader and mentor for 35 years in the Royal Ambassadors and gave countless hours at church. He served as a senior companion for 14 years at Belleville Area College. In his free time Robert enjoyed camping along the Meramec River, gardening and craft work. His kind and loving heart led him to visit the many area nursing homes where he brightened many of the residents’ day. He will be remembered for his giving ways and the many special times he shared with his family and friends.
He is survived by and will be missed by his wife, Betty J. (Barlow) Lewis, who he married on Sept. 3, 1949; daughter, Gail and (Carl) Wilson of Paducah, Ky.; grandchildren, Robert W. and (Amy) Lewis of Granite City, Kevin Wilson of Paducah, Ky., Julie and (Michael) Welker of Paducah, Ky.; great-grandchildren, Lauren Welker of Paducah, Ky., Bobby Lee Lewis of Granite City, Lora Louise Lewis of Granite City, Rick Crouch of Fillmore, Ill., McKenzie Earon of Fillmore, Mekinsey Welker of Paducah, Ky., Natalie Welker of Paducah, Ky., and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gary Wayne Lewis.
Friends may call on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of his life, services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at Second Baptist Church, 2100 Illinois Ave. in Granite City with Pastor Brian Smith officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
