Ross “Rosco” Mellenthin, 72, of Bethalto, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016, at home with his family by his side while under the care of BJC Hospice.
He was born Dec. 14, 1943, in Alton, the son of Ralph William Mellenthin and Mary Bernice Baker.
Ross married Heidi Bauer Feb. 21, 1964, in Germany. She survives.
Ross served in the Army and the Army Reserves for 21½ years during the Vietnam War and also in Desert Storm. He was a lifetime member of the Alton VFW Post 1308, the Bethalto American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and retired from Owens Illinois Glass. He was a huge NASCAR Fan, an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed Lionel trains. Ross also loved to go to McDonald’s in Bethalto and drink coffee every morning with his friends.
Ross is survived by his wife, Heidi; three daughters, Marion (Dwain) Burnham, Barb Mellenthin and Robin Durbin, all of Bethalto; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Rob) Stevenson of Collinsville, Jamie and Jordan Burnham, Emily Lackey and Tayler, and Ethan Durbin; two great-grandchildren, Lillian and Jon Stevenson; and several siblings, Floyd (Berdella) Baker of Alton, and David, Bob, Gene, Norma, Albert, Debbie, Marie, Zita and Janice.
The family would like to thank their wonderful nurse, Chonna Tupper, for being there for the family.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Visitation and funeral were Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Chaplain Bruce Baumberger officiating.
Burial followed at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308.
