Shirley Ann Ukena, 87, of Edwardsville, died at 9:10 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2015, at Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon, surrounded by her family.
She was born March 9, 1928, in East Alton, the daughter to the late Earl and Mildred (Burden) Miessner.
Shirley was a 1946 graduate of Wood River High School and was a champion speller and avid reader. She enjoyed her family, homemaking, travel, puzzles and western movies.
On March 3, 1973, she and Kenneth M. Ukena were married in Edwardsville. He survives in Edwardsville.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Marcy and husband, Steve Force, of Mascoutah; sons, Timothy Wiemers and wife, Patty, of Edwardsville, and Bob Wiemers of Roxana; step-daughters, Ronnies Seals and husband, Dennis of Glen Carbon, and Renee Ukena of Edwardsville; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Virgil Ukena and wife, Nancy, of Spring Valley and sisters-in-law, Novella Brockman of Edwardsville and Loretta Carmody of Carrollton.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Freddie Mae Dawson and husband, Roy; brothers-in-law, Vernon Ukena and wife, Zelda, Walter Brockman and Jess Carmody; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Tague and husband, Sonny, and Coletta Dalton and husband, Jack.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2015, at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights. Committal services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2015, at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
