Shirley Jean Knetzer, 82, of East Alton, passed away at 9:05 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis with her family by her side.
She was born on Sept. 25, 1932, in East Alton, the only child of Wilburn and Ella (Miller) Belangee.
She was married to the love of her life, Gerald “Jerry” Dale Knetzer, on Feb. 27, 1954, in Alton and he preceded her in death on March 22, 2008.
Shirley was a graduate of the 1953 class School of Nursing at Alton Memorial Hospital. She shared her faith caring for patients at St. Anthony’s Hospital for more than 40 years, where she still volunteered once a week until her death.
She had three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Marleen Knetzer of Alton, Mark and Kathy Knetzer of Baltimore, Md., and David and Elizabeth “Susie” Knetzer of Edwardsville; her grandchildren, Paul and Heather Knetzer, Matthew Knetzer, Christopher and Megan Knetzer and Brian Knetzer; great-grandchildren, Justin Addison and Wil Knetzer, sister-in-law, Betty (Graham) Knetzer; and her daughters, Lisa and Ruth Graham and Rita (Graham) O’Brien; and a very special cousin, Belva Martin of Bethalto.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Betty Knetzer; a brother-in-law, John Graham; and a niece, Mary Graham.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at Paynic Home for Funerals. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Walther as celebrant. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
