Shirley Mae Lyerla (Maxeiner) of Alton passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital with her husband and four children at her side.
She was born on Jan. 7, 1931, and lived in Brighton. She attended Brighton High School.
She married Harvey Lyerla on Sept. 25, 1951. Shirley and Harvey raised four children, Clifford, Eric, Jeri, and Dawn, in Fosterburg.
Shirley loved Fosterburg and the family farm. She was a gardener and loved the farming life. She was the bookkeeper for her husband’s construction company. She enjoyed fishing at their lake and loved traveling, having been to Alaska, Paris and a tour through Europe.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Clifford and his wife, Sher, and Eric and his wife, Julie; two daughters, Jeri and her husband, Tom, and Dawn and her husband, Gil; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Per her wishes, there will be a private funeral with immediate family only with a memorial service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a tribute can be made in her name to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research, of which Shirley was a 54-year survivor, or to the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey.
