Starkey Sloan, 80, of Brighton, passed away at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, under the care of BJC Hospice at Robings Manor in Brighton.
She was born in Detroit, Mich., on Dec. 27, 1934, the daughter of the late Robert and Viola (Cunningham) Evans.
In 1956, she married Louis Boyd, later divorcing. They had adopted three children. On Aug. 5, 1978, she married the late James Sloan in Greenville, Ill., who preceded her in death in February of 2012.
She graduated from Greenville High School Class of 1953 and attended Alton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1956. She worked as a nurse in Greenville’s Utlaut Hospital for several years, then worked as an obstetrical nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in East St. Louis. Next she accepted a position as supervisor of the obstetrical unit at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was also a licensed nursing home administrator and before retirement served as administrator at Eunice Smith Home in Alton for several years. During her working years she attended college, earning her Bachelor of Science Degree. She and Jim operated the Plain and Fancy Emporium on Broadway in Alton for several years. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, crafts, and reading. She belonged to two book clubs in Alton and served as president of the Retired Nurses of Madison County.
She is survived by three cousins and their families, Michael Cunningham, Carol Breitweiser and Tedra Sue Johnson; nieces and nephews; as well as many friends.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.
Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Panama, Ill.
